Assam Approves Proton Beam Therapy and Flood Relief

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a series of state cabinet decisions on August 30, 2026, focusing on healthcare infrastructure and disaster relief. The government approved 600 crore rupees for a Proton Beam Therapy machine at Guwahati Medical College & Hospital, with 315 crore rupees provided via a World Bank loan. Sarma noted that Assam would be the first state to offer this therapy at the public health care level.

In response to flash floods in Nepal, the state government coordinated the return of eight missing Assam residents, with their arrival at the Indian border expected by the evening of August 30. To support local victims, the cabinet authorized financial aid for families in the Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat districts through the Jiban Prerana Scheme, alongside payments for Orunodoi scheme beneficiaries.

Further economic measures include a 50,000 crore rupee development initiative with NABARD, including 30,000 crore rupees for the Viksit Assam project. The cabinet also allocated 109 crore rupees for infrastructure at Gauhati University and approved land allocations for new industrial estates.
