Russian Forces Help Niger Junta Suppress Military Mutiny

The military junta led by Abdourahamane Tiani suppressed a coordinated military mutiny in Niamey that began shortly after midnight on August 29, 2026. Mutinous soldiers, primarily from frontline regions including Ouallam, Tera, and Dosso, launched assaults on the presidential palace, the state broadcaster Tele Sahel, and Air Base 101 at Diori Hamani International Airport. The rebels briefly seized state media, took fellow soldiers hostage, and issued a statement declaring Tiani no longer the head of state.

Loyalist forces, including the Presidential Guard, regained control through a joint air and ground offensive. The Russian-backed Africa Corps provided critical aerial and ground support to neutralize the mutineers. Russian Ambassador Viktor Voropayev confirmed that Africa Corps intervened following a request for assistance. Dozens of soldiers were killed or arrested during the operation, with some later paraded on state television.

Defense Minister General Salifou Mody stated that the mutineers broke military discipline and shot at sensitive sites. The Alliance of Sahel States characterized the uprising as a "betrayal by a group of soldiers involved in a destabilisation plot." The unrest was reportedly driven by frustration over heavy battlefield losses against Islamic State and Al-Qaeda affiliates, as well as poor welfare. In a show of strategic support, Algeria deployed four Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets to Niamey following the event.
