Congressional Stock Trading Records Fuel Midterm Campaign Attacks
Democratic and Republican candidates are using stock trading records as political weapons amid disputes over the Stop Insider Trading Act.
Congressional stock trading has emerged as a primary flashpoint in competitive midterm campaigns. In Pennsylvania, Democratic nominee Paige Cognetti has targeted Republican incumbent Rob Bresnahan, alleging he became one of the most active traders in Congress despite campaigning on a ban in 2024.
In response to these attacks, Choose Freedom Inc. launched a $9 million advertising campaign across 20 districts to support Bresnahan and the Stop Insider Trading Act. While the House passed the Act in July with full Republican support, most Democrats voted against the measure, citing voter ID requirements and carve-outs for the president.
Parallel to the legislative debate, the existing STOCK Act faces criticism for insufficient penalties. House Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest was recently cited for a disclosure violation, marking one of 38 recorded infractions this year.
