Bank of America CEO Calls AI Hedge Fund Collapse Warning Shot
Brian Moynihan describes the near-collapse of AI hedge fund Situational Awareness as a warning regarding high market valuations and systemic leverage.
Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan characterized the near-collapse of the AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness as a "warning shot" for financial markets driven by high valuations and borrowed capital. The fund, led by Leopold Aschenbrenner, reached a peak of $45 billion in assets before its artificial intelligence bets soured, resulting in a fire sale of most of its public equities to Citadel last week.
Bank of America Corp, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan Chase acted as prime brokers for the fund, providing the necessary leverage and executing trades. Following the collapse, Moynihan indicated that prime brokers may tighten underwriting standards to better manage exposure to highly leveraged firms during periods of significant stock market run-ups.
