UN Official Warns Security Council of Palestine Crisis

United Nations deputy special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov briefed the UN Security Council on July 28, 2026, warning that recovery in Gaza is progressing too slowly and the situation in the West Bank is rapidly deteriorating. Alakbarov stated that Israeli military operations have confined the population of Gaza to approximately one-third of its territory, creating primary obstacles to humanitarian aid and reconstruction.

In the West Bank, Alakbarov highlighted escalating insecurity caused by Israeli colonist militias and the Israeli Security Cabinet's allocation of 1.3 billion shekels for new settlements. He specifically condemned the unauthorized entry of Israeli forces into the UNRWA Kalandia Training Centre in East Jerusalem. He further noted that the Palestinian National Authority is facing a critical financial collapse because Israel continues to withhold clearance revenues, which hinders the delivery of essential public services.

Alakbarov urged the Security Council to translate resolutions into action and called for the implementation of the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict. He emphasized that Gaza's reconstruction requires a political process and called for conditions that would allow Palestinian Legislative Council elections to take place on November 28.
