Bill Gates Warns AI Will Permanently Erase Many Jobs

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned in a new essay that artificial intelligence will cause many jobs to disappear forever, specifically targeting entry- and mid-level positions. He identified sales, customer support, software engineering, and paralegal work as the first sectors likely to face disruption. This automation is expected to spread to medicine, law, manufacturing, construction, and hospitality within a decade.

Gates argued that AI-driven automation differs from typical economic downturns because it may lead to permanent displacement rather than temporary layoffs. He cautioned that the shift will occur rapidly over the course of a decade rather than across several generations.

To mitigate these risks, Gates called for the implementation of stronger safety nets, retraining programs, and taxes on AI and robots. He also proposed the designation of Human Reserved roles to ensure specific jobs remain under human control.
