Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston Opens Door to Data Centres

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston announced on Wednesday that the province is softening its opposition to new data centres. Houston previously argued that such discussions were premature until major energy initiatives, including the Wind West offshore wind proposal, were completed. He now asserts that these facilities can create the demand and investment cases necessary to accelerate those energy projects.

Houston cited the need for Canada to maintain domestic control over its data and the critical nature of data infrastructure as primary drivers for the policy shift. He also noted that new federal rules from the Treasury Board of Canada have made him more open to proposals.

The Premier stated the province will consider companies that can protect water resources, protect ratepayers, strengthen communities, and create economic opportunities. He warned that companies unable to meet these standards will not be permitted to build in Nova Scotia.
