Ford CEO Says AI Will Assist Skilled Trades Workers

Ford CEO Jim Farley argues that artificial intelligence will act as a companion for blue-collar workers while eliminating routine white-collar roles.

Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, stated that artificial intelligence will serve as a companion for blue-collar and skilled-trades workers rather than a replacement. Speaking at a Ford Pro Accelerate roundtable, Farley argued that AI will help technicians and factory workers perform complex tasks and address acute labor shortages.

Farley noted that while skilled trades are protected, AI will likely eliminate or change routine white-collar roles in finance, call centers, and entry-level programming. Ford is currently implementing AI and augmented reality to assist dealers with complex vehicle repairs and utilizing AI vision systems for quality control in manufacturing.

Stanley Black & Decker CEO Chris Nelson supported this view, describing AI and robotics as essential tools to clear project backlogs caused by a shortage of industrial workers. Nelson cited an autonomous drilling robot used in data-center construction as an example of a tool that handles repetitive work so skilled laborers can focus on complex tasks. Farley emphasized that the success of these tools depends on building worker trust to ensure data is not used against employees.
