California School Districts Face Elections Amid Financial and Labor Unrest

Voters in Pasadena and Little Lake school districts will elect trustees next month following disputes over school closures, budget transparency, and a historic teachers strike.

School districts in California are heading into November elections marked by deep institutional instability and community division. In the Pasadena Unified School District, voters will elect trustees for three board districts as the Board of Education remains split 4-3 over whether to consolidate schools or pursue a district transformation process. This deadlock, fueled by a financial crisis and declining enrollment, has triggered recall efforts against Board President Tina Fredericks and Trustee Scott Harden.

Candidates in Pasadena are divided on the solution to enrollment drops. Incumbent Kim Kenne suggests that student projections may necessitate fewer schools, while Michelle Richardson Bailey argues for exploring administrative efficiencies and enrollment recovery before considering closures.

Simultaneously, the Little Lake City School District will elect three trustees on November 3. This election follows a historic 10-day teachers strike in April led by the Little Lake Education Association, which secured better health benefits and special education support but resulted in the resignation of Superintendent Jonathan Vasquez. Current campaigns in Little Lake focus on restoring community trust and fiscal responsibility following the board's June approval of two $45 million bond measures for repairs and equipment upgrades.
