BC Prosperity Project Campaigns for Western Canadian Secession

The BC Prosperity Project held its first in-person organizational meeting in Campbell River on February 2, 2026. Led by organizer Peter Letourneux, the movement advocates for British Columbia to secede from Canada and join Alberta and Saskatchewan in a new nation to eliminate the influence of the federal government in Ottawa.

Supporters of the project, including former political candidate Michael Henshall, argue that economic instability and poverty make immediate independence necessary. The group distinguishes itself from the older Cascadia movement, which focused on bioregionalism and environmental challenges in the Pacific Northwest rather than political separation.

B.C. Premier David Eby criticized the movement, and the project's emergence has sparked protests. Political analysts note that the movement faces steep legal obstacles, citing a 1998 Supreme Court of Canada ruling that provinces cannot unilaterally secede from the federation.
