Sri Lanka Earns 1.5 Billion Dollars From Tourism in 2026
Sri Lanka has earned over 1.5 billion dollars from tourism this year as it pursues a target of 2.5 million visitors by year-end.
Sri Lanka has generated more than 1.5 billion U.S. dollars from tourism in 2026, with visitor arrivals exceeding 1.2 million. Ruwan Ranasinghe, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, announced these figures during a press conference in Colombo, stating that the sector continues to recover and expand. The government aims to attract 2.5 million tourists by the end of the year to secure critical foreign exchange earnings.
Despite the overall growth, June 2026 data shows a monthly decline in tourism earnings compared to May 2026, which officials attribute to seasonal patterns. During the same period, the country saw mixed foreign exchange inflows. While tourism dipped, workers' remittances grew 9.3 percent year-on-year to reach 695 million dollars in June, though this also represented a decrease from May levels.
These sectors remain central to the broader economic recovery program and the stabilization of external accounts following a severe financial crisis. Maintaining foreign reserve buffers through these inflows is a primary objective for the national administration.
