Mitch McConnell Returns Home After Two-Month Medical Absence

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell announced his discharge from a rehabilitation facility after a nearly two-month absence from Congress. The senator has remained out of public view since June 14, when a fall at his Washington, D.C., home led to hospitalization for pneumonia and a subsequent stay in a rehabilitation center.

McConnell stated he will maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the current five-week Senate recess while continuing to engage with staff and colleagues. While his office previously released photos of the senator with his wife, Elaine Chao, to address public speculation, a spokesperson has not officially confirmed his return date to the Senate. However, commentator Scott Jennings reported that McConnell called him directly, appearing alert and intending to return on September 14.

The senator's prolonged silence has drawn criticism from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who argued that McConnell owes the public transparency regarding his health and ability to perform his duties. In contrast, Senator Rand Paul urged patience, acknowledging that while McConnell is struggling, he is working toward a return. Senate Republicans continue to manage the loss of McConnell's vote amid a slim GOP majority.
