Jammu Authorities Suspend Amarnath Yatra Amid Article 370 Protests

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir suspended the annual Amarnath Yatra from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp on August 5, 2026. This precautionary measure coincided with the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, which originally revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and reorganized the region into two Union Territories.

To reduce traffic on the strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, officials also halted the movement of security convoys. These restrictions prevented new batches of pilgrims from traveling toward the Baltal and Pahalgam base camps on Wednesday.

The security crackdown occurred as the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, the Indian National Congress, and the Peoples Democratic Party observed a "Black Day." These political organizations held protest programs demanding the restoration of the region's special constitutional status and the granting of full statehood.
