Australian Banks and Telstra Cut Thousands of Jobs
Major Australian financial and telecommunications firms are cutting thousands of roles amid accelerating adoption of artificial intelligence and structural reorganizations.
Major Australian financial institutions and telecommunications providers are implementing significant workforce reductions. ANZ announced it will cut 3,500 jobs by September 2026, while Telstra Corporation Limited reduced 2,800 roles in the year ending June 2025 and expects an additional 550 cuts later in the year. Other reductions include an estimated 1,500 positions at Westpac Banking Corporation and 200 roles at the Bank of Queensland Limited.
These cuts coincide with an acceleration in artificial intelligence adoption. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia previously planned to replace 45 customer service workers with an AI chatbot before reversing the decision, though former employees allege AI still drives unofficial redundancies. The Bank of Queensland Limited cut roles in August while simultaneously partnering with Capgemini to increase AI usage.
Executives from ANZ, Telstra Corporation Limited, and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia deny that AI is the direct cause of these losses, attributing them to structural reorganizations and evolving business needs. However, critics and academic experts argue that the automation of standardized tasks is driving a decline in white-collar employment.
