Letitia James Releases Guide to Combat AI Election Misinformation
New York Attorney General Letitia James released an updated guide to help voters identify and report AI-generated deepfakes and misinformation ahead of the November election.
New York Attorney General Letitia James released an updated guide on October 15, 2026, designed to help voters identify and report AI-generated election misinformation. James warned that deepfakes have become increasingly realistic, rendering traditional indicators like unnatural movements less reliable for detection. She specifically highlighted the risk of AI chatbots providing incorrect voting requirements and deadlines.
James urged citizens to verify all election data through official channels, such as local boards of elections or the Office of the Attorney General. Under New York state law, AI-generated political messaging must be clearly labeled; failure to do so can result in fines, probation, or jail time.
The initiative precedes the start of early voting on October 24 and the general election on November 3. James is currently running for reelection against Republican candidate and former federal prosecutor Saritha Komatireddy. The effort follows similar legal actions in other states, including Michigan, where Attorney General Dana Nessel secured judgments against actors who used AI misinformation to target communities of color in Michigan and Illinois.
