India Reports Record $19 Billion Defense Production in FY26

India's defense production hit a record $19 billion in FY26, driven by the Make in India initiative and increased private sector participation.

India's defense production reached a record $19 billion (Rs 1.78 lakh crore) in financial year 2025-26, more than doubling since FY21 and tripling since FY2014-15. Rajnath Singh, India's Defence Minister, announced these figures in New Delhi on July 4, attributing the growth to the Make in India initiative and the broader Reform, Perform, Transform policy.

Defense exports also hit an all-time high of over Rs 38,000 crore, an increase of nearly 57 times compared to FY2013-14. Growth was driven by government policy reforms, including positive indigenization lists, simplified procurement, and increased research and development. While Defense Public Sector Undertakings accounted for 76% of production, private sector contribution rose to a record 24%, valued at approximately Rs 42,000 crore.

Singh stated that Operation Sindoor, a military action conducted in May 2025 following the Pahalgam terror attack, significantly boosted trust in indigenous platforms. The arms trade surplus grew tenfold over eight years to $691 million, with exports shifting toward Armenia, Romania, and Slovenia. The product mix evolved significantly, with bombs and grenades rising from 28% of total arms exports in FY21 to 78% in FY26.

Beyond defense, Singh highlighted industrial milestones including the India Semiconductor Mission, the rollout of indigenous 5G technology, and the growth of mobile and automobile manufacturing. He noted that 22.35 billion UPI transactions occurred in April. Additionally, the government is reportedly in talks with the United Arab Emirates to sell the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system.
