Mayor Mamdani Calls for Global Solidarity at Mandela Forum
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged world leaders to combat systemic oppression and contemporary injustices during the inaugural Nelson Mandela Global Leadership Forum.
Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York City, delivered the keynote address at the inaugural Nelson Mandela Global Leadership Forum on July 15, 2026. Hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation at The Town Hall in New York, the forum established a platform for dialogue and democratic leadership in anticipation of International Nelson Mandela Day on July 18.
Mamdani argued that solidarity is a necessary strategy for confronting systemic oppression rather than a mere value. He challenged the international community to honor the legacy of Nelson Mandela through concrete action against contemporary injustices. Specifically, he called for support for Palestinians, individuals detained in Israel and India, and victims of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
During his speech, Mamdani drew parallels between the anti-apartheid struggle and modern global issues, including the war in Gaza and political imprisonment. He warned that social media algorithms and economic inequality are increasing societal divisions, urging citizens and leaders to act while verdicts on current injustices are still being rendered by history.
