Passamaquoddy Tribe Considers Buying Closed Eastport Grocery Store

The R&M IGA, the sole grocery store in Eastport, Maine, closed in September 2026 after owner Merilyn Mills retired. The family-operated business shut down after Mills failed to find a buyer, leaving the town and the Pleasant Point reservation without local access to fresh produce. Residents must now travel 35 to 45 minutes to Calais or Perry for groceries, a situation compounded by the recent closure of the Eastport Family Pharmacy.

In response to the resulting food desert, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Sipayik is considering purchasing the store. Tribal council member Adam Newell proposed a referendum to determine if the tribe should conduct due diligence on the investment. Sipayik voters will decide on Tuesday whether to authorize the chief and tribal council to explore the acquisition. Other parties, including Edwards Brother Supermarkets, have also held conversations with Mills.

The potential purchase has sparked internal tribal tension. Councilwoman Melissa Francis criticized the move as a low priority compared to other community needs. The referendum coincides with a concurrent election for tribal chief. Eastport City Manager Brian Schuth has expressed concern over the impact on the local economy and the accessibility of affordable food for residents who cannot drive.
