Alexi Giannoulias Leads Chicago Mayoral Race With $19 Million
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias holds a massive fundraising lead over incumbent Mayor Brandon Johnson in the 2027 Chicago mayoral race.
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has emerged as the financial frontrunner in the 2027 Chicago mayoral race, holding over $19.1 million in campaign funds. According to filings with the Illinois State Board of Elections, Giannoulias spent $5.7 million during the third quarter, largely on television commercials, and received a $250,000 donation from Matthew Pritzker.
Brandon Johnson reports a significant deficit, with campaign funds dropping to $379,471 as of September 30. The incumbent mayor spent more than three times the amount he raised between July and September, allocating most of those funds toward field consulting to develop a grassroots ground game. Other candidates maintaining substantial reserves include lobbyist John Kelly with $2.5 million, state Comptroller Susana Mendoza with $1.7 million, and businessman Joe Holberg with over $1 million.
Mayor Johnson dismissed concerns regarding the funding gap, citing his background as a working-class former public school teacher. He stated that he does not have "millionaire friends" and expressed confidence that his record and "people power" will secure his reelection. The Chicago Teachers Union is expected to provide future financial support to the mayor's campaign.
