Democratic Primary Battle Intensifies for Wisconsin Governor Seat

The Democratic primary for Governor of Wisconsin has narrowed to a contest between frontrunner Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist, and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. The race shifted following the withdrawals of Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez and former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, the latter of whom exited amid misconduct allegations involving young adult women.

Governor Tony Evers and U.S. Representative Gwen Moore have endorsed Crowley to provide a moderate alternative to Hong. Crowley has relaunched his campaign with visits to western Wisconsin cities including Ashland, Superior, and Hudson, positioning himself as a candidate capable of attracting Independents and moderate Republicans. He is focusing his platform on affordability, public education, and workforce development.

Despite the endorsements, polling indicates Hong maintains a significant lead, particularly among young and liberal voters. To broaden her appeal, Hong has distanced herself from certain Democratic Socialists of America positions, stating that a governor cannot defund the police and calling the elimination of the U.S. Senate nonpractical.

Republican Representative Tom Tiffany, the likely general election opponent, is campaigning on tax reductions and lower utility rates. Tiffany has targeted Hong's political record, specifically her past ties to the DSA and views on policing, to frame her as too radical for the general electorate.
