IMF Director Warns Global Debt Will Exceed 100 Percent GDP

Rodrigo Valdes of the IMF warns that rising interest rates and spending demands will push global public debt past 100 percent of GDP by 2030.

The International Monetary Fund warns that governments worldwide face severe fiscal challenges as global public debt is projected to exceed 100 percent of global GDP before 2030. Rodrigo Valdes, director of the IMF Fiscal Affairs Department, stated in an interview in Washington, D.C., that nearly all economies are struggling with high debt levels and increasing costs.

Valdes identified population aging, climate change, and increased defense spending in the United States and Europe as the primary drivers of public spending pressures. He noted that rising interest rates have increased the cost of carrying this debt, creating a global phenomenon that requires greater efforts to stabilize fiscal positions.

To address these challenges, Valdes urged policymakers to adopt a holistic approach to fiscal policy by balancing revenues and spending and replacing costly subsidies with targeted, transparent interventions. He observed that China remains less vulnerable than other high-debt nations because of its high savings rate, liquid assets, and relatively low interest rates.
