Andrej Karpathy Warns of Widening Global AI Capability Gap
Andrej Karpathy describes a sharp funnel in AI adoption, where a tiny elite uses frontier models for complex projects while most people remain casual users.
OpenAI cofounder Andrej Karpathy stated on Sunday that a significant gap in the understanding and utilization of large language models is widening across the global population. He describes this disparity as a sharp funnel, estimating that 75 percent of the world's population has barely interacted with AI, while 1 to 2 billion people are casual users of free-tier chatbots.
Karpathy identifies a smaller group of 20 million people using frontier models for complex coding projects and a tiny elite of approximately 5,000 individuals with inside access to the most advanced systems. He warns that these frontier systems can now execute software mega projects, including scientific discoveries and cyber attacks, at machine speeds that outpace human review.
Other industry leaders echoed the sentiment that current adoption is superficial. Box CEO Aaron Levie noted that current usage dramatically underrepresents the full capability of AI. Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan encouraged professionals to join AI labs to gain access to these advanced tools.
