AI Chip Startups Raise $8.3 Billion to Challenge Nvidia

AI chip startups raised $8.3 billion globally in 2026, marking an increase in investor efforts to challenge the market dominance of Nvidia. This funding surge is primarily driven by a shift toward AI inference, where startups claim that purpose-built system architectures provide superior energy and cost efficiency compared to standard GPU-based designs.
In the United States, Cerebras Systems led the funding trend by securing $1 billion in February, while MatX, Ayar Labs, and Etched each raised $500 million. European firms also saw significant investment, with Axelera and Olix each raising more than $200 million.
Nvidia responded to the competition through aggressive spending and acquisitions. The company invested over $18 billion in research and development for the financial year ending January 2026 and committed $4 billion to photonics technology in March. Additionally, Nvidia acquired assets from the AI inference startup Groq for $20 billion in December to protect its industry position.
