Teenager Drops Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Against Meta

A 15-year-old plaintiff from Florida, identified as R.K.C., dismissed his lawsuit against Meta Platforms Inc. on July 23, 2026, just days before a scheduled trial in Los Angeles. The plaintiff had alleged that Meta's platforms fueled social media addiction, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and suicidal ideation.

While Meta was the final defendant, Google's YouTube, TikTok, and Snap Inc. all reached confidential or tentative settlements with the plaintiff between June and July 20. Attorneys for R.K.C. stated the withdrawal followed the overall successful result of the litigation and a desire to avoid a grueling trial to focus on recovery. Meta characterized the dismissal as a victory, asserting that the claims were baseless and that the plaintiff received no payment from the company.

This case served as a designated bellwether trial intended to help resolve more than 3,000 similar lawsuits across the United States. In a previous bellwether trial in early 2026, Meta and Google were found negligent and ordered to pay $6 million to another plaintiff. Seven additional bellwether cases remain pending in the Los Angeles Superior Court, with the next trial scheduled for October.
