Finland Investigates Suspected Foreign Break-ins at MP Homes
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo warns that a foreign power may be behind a series of suspected break-ins at the homes of Finnish members of parliament.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated that a foreign power may be responsible for a series of suspected break-ins at the homes of several members of parliament in the Helsinki area. Police are investigating multiple reports from the past year where no items were stolen, but investigators found subtle signs of entry, including doors left open and lights left on.
Orpo warned that these actions could be attempts to destabilize Finland or undermine support for Ukraine, particularly with parliamentary elections scheduled in six months. He noted that Russia has sought to influence elections in several European countries.
President Alexander Stubb characterized the incidents as an attack on democracy, stating that such actions should not be allowed or accepted in any form. Speaker Jussi Halla-aho described the number of cases as significant and noted that such behavior is often associated with state actors, though he cautioned against speculation while the investigation is ongoing. The Helsinki Police Department is currently conducting a preliminary inquiry in coordination with the National Bureau of Investigation.
