China Records 5.3 Billion Domestic Trips Through September 2026
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism reports a 6.2 percent increase in domestic trips and spending through September 2026 as part of a long-term development plan.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism reported that China's domestic tourism market grew steadily from January to September 2026. During this period, the country recorded more than 5.3 billion domestic trips, representing a 6.2 percent increase compared to the previous year. Urban residents accounted for over 4 billion of these trips, while rural residents made 1.27 billion.
Total domestic tourism spending rose 2.2 percent to 4.95 trillion yuan, or approximately 737 billion U.S. dollars. These figures align with a five-year tourism development plan for 2026-2030 released in July, which aims for 8.3 billion annual domestic trips and 7.7 trillion yuan in annual spending by 2030.
While the 2026 data shows growth, it follows a record-breaking 2025, which saw over 6.5 billion trips and 6.3 trillion yuan in total expenditure.
