United Kingdom Proposes Solar Bonds for Residential Installations

The Government of the United Kingdom proposed solar bonds to lower capital costs for residential rooftop solar installations through property-attached loans.

The Government of the United Kingdom has proposed the implementation of solar bonds to reduce the cost of capital for residential rooftop solar installations. This financial model allows investors to earn a modest, guaranteed return while providing homeowners with cheaper capital through loans attached to the property rather than the individual. The initiative aims to remove high-interest financing barriers for homeowners unable to cover upfront installation costs.

Alexis Abramson, Dean of the Columbia Climate School, suggested that the United States adopt a similar state-by-state approach. Abramson argued that such a model could fill critical financing gaps in the U.S. following the scheduled expiration of the 30% residential solar tax credit and the federal Solar for All programme at the end of 2025.
