AI Data Center Boom Drives US Construction Labor Shortage

The rapid expansion of AI data centers is creating a severe shortage of skilled construction workers across the United States, driving up labor costs and threatening the timelines of residential and commercial projects. A 2026 survey conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America and the National Center for Construction Education and Research found that 58% of construction firms report increased competition for workers due to data center projects, while 36% find job openings harder to fill.

Fraser Patterson, CEO of Skillit, notes that data center projects offer a wage premium of approximately 32% over other construction work. This shift affects core trades including electricians, carpenters, concrete workers, and heavy equipment operators, effectively raising typical wages from $30 to roughly $40 per hour. While these projects provide safer environments and career growth for tradespeople, the competition is pulling labor away from other sectors.

Industry experts warn that these rising labor costs may eventually be passed to consumers through more expensive homes and commercial real estate. Contractors indicate that this labor crunch is further compounded by rising material costs and immigration enforcement.
