DNC Sets 2028 Primary Calendar Sparking New Hampshire Conflict
The Democratic National Committee designated South Carolina as the first 2028 primary state, prompting New Hampshire to defy the order and risk severe party penalties.
The Democratic National Committee finalized its 2028 presidential primary calendar on Saturday, establishing South Carolina as the first state to vote, followed by Nevada and New Hampshire. This sequence directly contradicts New Hampshire state law, which requires the state to hold the first-in-the-nation primary.
New Hampshire Secretary of State Dave Scanlan announced that the state will proceed with its primary two weeks before the scheduled South Carolina date. This defiance places New Hampshire in violation of party rules, exposing the state to penalties approved by the rules and bylaws committee in June.
Potential sanctions include a $270,000 fine and a significant reduction in the state's representation at the 2028 Democratic National Convention. The DNC's penalties could leave New Hampshire completely unrepresented at the convention.
