Nvidia Vera Rubin Platform Drives AI Capacitor Price Surge
Samsung Electro-Mechanics and other producers are raising prices and signing long-term contracts as Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform spikes demand for multilayer ceramic capacitors.
The launch of the Vera Rubin AI platform by Nvidia has triggered a surge in demand for multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) due to the increased power requirements of AI infrastructure. The VR200 NVL72 server rack requires an estimated USD 4,320 in MLCC content, marking a 182 percent increase over the prior GB300 system.
This demand is significantly outpacing production capacity. Goldman Sachs estimates that while demand will quadruple by 2030, production capacity will grow only slightly above 10 percent annually. In response to the shortage, market leaders Murata and Taiyo Yuden have increased prices for automotive and AI server components by 15 to 35 percent this year.
To stabilize volume and boost operating profits, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, the world's second-largest high-end MLCC producer, has begun signing legally binding mid- to long-term supply agreements with major AI technology firms.
