MIC Director Forecasts AI Infrastructure Takeover by 2028
Chris Hung announced the global AI industry is shifting from model development to infrastructure deployment, with AI semiconductors projected to claim nearly half the market by 2028.
Chris Hung, Director General of the Market Intelligence and Consulting Institute, declared that the global AI industry is undergoing a fundamental transition from model development toward infrastructure expansion and real-world deployment. Speaking at the COMPUTEX Best Choice Award ceremony in Taipei, Hung characterized AI as a new generation of national infrastructure, emphasizing that applications are migrating from cloud environments into edge computing, end-user devices, and manufacturing sites.
This shift is generating surging demand across multiple hardware categories, including servers, networking equipment, cooling systems, and power infrastructure. MIC projects that AI-related semiconductors will account for nearly half of the overall semiconductor market by 2028, a milestone that underscores the scale of the infrastructure buildout underway. Global AI server shipments are expected to continue rising through 2030, reflecting sustained investment in data center capacity.
Hung also predicted that AI PCs will reach a rapid adoption stage by 2026, signaling that the infrastructure transition extends beyond enterprise data centers into consumer devices. The MIC forecasts collectively paint a picture of an industry moving from experimentation and training phases into large-scale deployment, with hardware and infrastructure providers positioned as the primary beneficiaries of the next wave of AI spending.
