India and Pakistan Clash Over Kashmir at United Nations

India and Pakistan exchanged sharp criticisms at the UN General Assembly regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir and allegations of human rights abuses.

The Government of Pakistan and the Government of India engaged in a sharp diplomatic exchange during the United Nations General Assembly's Third Committee on October 3, 2026. Pakistan rejected India's position that Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter, with First Secretary Sarfraz Ahmed Gohar asserting that the territory is an internationally recognized disputed area. Gohar argued that the final status of the region must be determined by UN Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people, while accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government of increasing religion-based violence against minorities.

Exercising its Right of Reply, India rejected these claims and asserted that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral and inalienable parts of India. Indian representative Bhavika Mangalanandan accused Pakistan of using the Kashmir dispute to distract from domestic instability and the influence of the Pakistani Army over its civilian governments. India further alleged that Islamabad sponsors cross-border terrorism and suppresses human rights in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, specifically citing unrest in Rawalakot.

Pakistan maintained its commitment to diplomacy for the stability of South Asia, while India countered that Pakistan would better serve its people by addressing its own economic and political fault lines rather than coveting foreign territory.
