S&P/ASX 200 Hits Record 9,213 Points on Inflation Optimism
The S&P/ASX 200 index reached a new all-time high of 9,213 points amid easing US-Iran tensions and cooler Australian inflation data.
The S&P/ASX 200 index reached a new intraday record of 9,213.00 on August 5, 2026, surpassing its previous peaks from February and March. The rally was driven by optimism over a potential interim deal between the United States and Iran to de-escalate conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which reduced global concerns regarding energy supplies.
Domestic economic indicators further supported the climb. Cooler-than-expected core inflation data for the quarter ending in June led traders to lower their expectations for additional interest-rate hikes. This sentiment was bolstered by the measured tone of Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullock. Additionally, June household spending exceeded estimates, benefiting banks and consumer-focused shares.
Market performance varied by sector. The materials sector jumped 2.5 percent, led by gains from BHP Group and Rio Tinto Group, while uranium stocks rose on artificial intelligence-related confidence. Conversely, the energy sector declined nearly two percent as oil prices hit three-week lows. Financials also faced pressure, with Commonwealth Bank leading a dip among the big four banks. By midday, the initial surge eased, and the index ended the session at 9,165.7 points, a gain of 0.22 percent.
