Insurgent Attacks in Niger Kill at Least 52 Security Personnel

A series of coordinated insurgent attacks across Niger have resulted in the deaths of at least 52 security personnel. In the Dosso Region, suspected Islamic State fighters overran a forward operating base of the Nigerien Defence and Security Forces at Dankassari, killing 21 soldiers. Around the same time, a separate assault targeted security forces in the town of N’Guigmi in the Diffa Region, where 17 members of the security forces, including one officer, were killed.

Additional reports from the outskirts of N’Guigmi indicate that Boko Haram jihadists also attacked a security outpost on Friday. Local sources reported 10 soldiers and four national guard personnel died in that specific engagement, though the state news agency ANP confirmed the deaths without providing a final tally. General Mahamadou Ibrahim, the governor of Diffa, traveled to N’Guigmi to oversee the burials of the fallen security members.

Nigerien military forces are currently sweeping the Diffa region near Lake Chad, where insurgents maintain several camps. Local residents stated that some attackers were killed during the fighting. These incidents contribute to a broader trend of violence in the Tillabéri, Dosso, Diffa, and Tahoua regions; data from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project indicates that over 5,828 people, including 2,000 security personnel, have died in terrorism-related violence since the military takeover in July 2023.
