Amazon AWS Revenue Surges 39% Amid Massive AI Spending
Amazon reports strong growth in its cloud division while forecasting $220 billion in capital spending to support artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The cloud division of Amazon.com, Amazon Web Services, reported a 39% increase in quarterly revenue to $46 billion. This growth has pushed the unit to an annual revenue run rate of $184 billion, establishing it as the primary profit driver for the parent company.
Despite the revenue surge, the company faces significant pressure on its free cash flow due to the infrastructure requirements of artificial intelligence. Amazon forecasts total capital spending of $220 billion for the full year, which has resulted in negative free cash flow of more than $42 billion over the trailing 12 months.
Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy stated that these financial headwinds will persist until new data centers are operational and monetized. He noted that spending typically precedes monetization by two years, indicating that the current investment phase is a prerequisite for future AI-driven returns.
