Goodluck Jonathan Warns Against Political Intimidation in Off-Cycle Polls

Former President Goodluck Jonathan cautioned that the mass mobilization of governors during off-cycle elections threatens Nigeria's democracy following the August 15 Osun governorship election.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan warned that the growing trend of serving governors and senior political leaders converging on states during off-cycle elections could destabilize Nigeria's fragile democracy. Following the August 15 Osun governorship election, where Governor Ademola Adeleke was declared the winner, Jonathan described the presence of influential officials and their heavy security details as an unwholesome practice that creates an atmosphere of intimidation and undue pressure on voters.

Jonathan recalled his own tenure as president, noting he had ordered senior officials to leave states during the 2013 Anambra and 2014 Ekiti elections to prevent undue influence. He urged the National Peace Committee to convene a stakeholders' engagement with the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, and the National Assembly to establish clear boundaries for political conduct. Senator Adolphus Wabara characterized Adeleke's victory as a triumph over federal might and political intimidation.

Other officials offered varying views on election security. Defence Minister Christopher Musa argued that security must be an intelligence-led process starting months before polls, while legal expert Mofesomo Tayo-Oyetibo maintained that heavy security is necessary for protection if agencies remain neutral. Separately, Primate Elijah Ayodele warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that public grievances could lead to a brutal 2027 general election if the government fails to pacify citizens and relies on electoral rigging.
