German Exports Fall 0.8% in August Defying Expectations
Statistisches Bundesamt reports a 0.8% drop in German exports for August, driven by a sharp decline in shipments to the United States.
The Statistisches Bundesamt reported that German exports fell by 0.8% in August, contradicting analyst predictions of a 0.6% increase. This decline was primarily driven by a 6.3% drop in exports to the United States and a 1.1% decrease in exports to non-EU countries. Exports to EU member states also saw a slight decline of 0.6%.
Some trading partners showed growth during the same period. Exports to the United Kingdom rose by 16.7%, while exports to China increased by 4.7%. However, imports from China grew by 11.0%.
Overall imports rose by 0.9% in August. This combination of falling exports and rising imports narrowed Germany's trade surplus to €19.5 billion, down from the €21.6 billion recorded in July.
