Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Defends AI Regulation Strategy
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei denied accusations of seeking regulatory capture and argued that AI companies must deliver tangible benefits to overcome a crisis of trust.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei defended the company's approach to AI regulation and risk in a series of posts on X, responding to criticisms from investor Gavin Baker and David Sacks. Sacks accused the company of pursuing regulatory capture to eliminate competition and hobble the U.S. tech sector, while Baker alleged that Amodei believed Anthropic could eventually become the only private company in the world.
Amodei denied these claims, arguing that regulation can constrain corporate power and that Anthropic advocates for rules that protect smaller competitors. He characterized the public's negative view of AI as a "crisis of trust" rather than a result of warnings about AI risks. Amodei stated that AI companies, including Anthropic, have not yet delivered on big promises to benefit the world and must provide tangible results, such as curing cancer, to regain public confidence.
Sasha de Marigny, Anthropic's Chief Brand and Communications Officer, also denied claims regarding Amodei's comments on the company's market position. These disputes occur as Anthropic is reportedly on course for $65 billion in annual revenue while preparing for a potential IPO.
