Barack Obama Urges House Democrats to Prioritize 2026 Midterms

Former President Barack Obama urged House Democrats to prioritize winning control of the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections over internal ideological disputes. Speaking at a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee event in Los Angeles, Obama advised lawmakers to "focus like a laser" on the upcoming election and resolve differences between the party's progressive and moderate wings after the vote.

Obama argued that social media often magnifies divisions within the party, but maintained that Democrats share core agreements on healthcare, living wages, and non-discrimination. He noted that Democratic victories in 2025 have reenergized the party and provided a roadmap for messaging on affordability.

He emphasized that securing the House is a necessary prerequisite for the party to tell a broader story and block "the worst impulses" of the current White House. Obama suggested that once the election is won, the party's talent will be in a position to sort through existing differences as the next presidential campaign begins.
