Bank of America Forecasts Semiconductor Recovery by Early 2027
Bank of America predicts a semiconductor stock recovery by early 2027 following a 37% decline in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has fallen 37% from its recent peak, driven by investor fears that artificial intelligence capital expenditure may slow. Bank of America predicts a potential recovery in early 2027, though it notes that a durable bottom may require earnings estimate cuts to be fully priced in. The bank outlines three scenarios: a baseline case with a 10% further decline before a first-quarter 2027 trough, a bear case extending the downturn into mid-2027, and a bull case triggered by a sharp recovery in AI investment.
Recent market volatility saw significant October declines for major players, with Micron Technology falling approximately 20%, Nvidia Inc. over 10%, and Broadcom Inc. 5%. Despite this, these companies project strong growth for 2027. Nvidia expects a 70% growth rate next year, supported by projections that the five largest AI hyperscalers will increase spending to approximately $1.3 trillion. Broadcom aims to double its AI semiconductor revenue in 2027 through custom computing units, while Micron expects memory chip demand to remain high through 2028.
Bank of America identifies Nvidia, AMD, and Micron as top picks across its scenarios. The bank suggests that corporate buybacks from firms such as Lam Research and Nvidia may help restore investor confidence. Currently, U.S. cloud capital expenditure is annualizing at $1.2 trillion, but a failure to reach 2027 forecasts of $1.5 trillion could create significant headwinds for the sector.
