Boston Sues Meta and Other Tech Giants Over Youth Mental Health
Boston filed a federal lawsuit against Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube, alleging addictive platform designs contributed to a youth mental health crisis.
The City of Boston filed a federal lawsuit in the Northern District of California against Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube on behalf of Boston Public Schools. Mayor Michelle Wu stated the action aims to end "exploitative practices" and hold these companies accountable for a youth mental health crisis caused by the deliberate design of addictive features, including infinite scrolling and targeted algorithms.
The city cites data indicating that persistent sadness among high school students in the district rose from 27% in 2015 to 44% in 2021. This trend forced the school district to significantly increase its staffing of psychologists and social workers. The lawsuit seeks financial compensation to cover these resource costs and the removal of features designed to keep minors engaged at the expense of their mental health.
This legal action joins a larger consolidation of claims filed by more than 1,500 school districts across the United States. Meta denied the allegations, asserting its commitment to supporting young people.
