Tendring Council Proposes Safeguarding Tye Field Amid Housing Protest
Tendring District Council is proposing to safeguard Tye Field as open space following a community campaign to block a 95-home development in Lawford.
Residents of Lawford, Essex, are campaigning to block a proposal by Welbeck Strategic Land to build up to 95 homes on land off Grange Road. The proposed development is situated adjacent to Tye Henge, a 4,000-year-old Neolithic ritual site.
Tendring District Council is now proposing to designate Tye Field as a safeguarded open space in its Local Plan in response to the community campaign. The Lawford Tye Action Group has fought to protect the land for over 10 years and recently launched a petition that gathered 1,840 signatures. Additionally, the council has received 669 formal objections to the planning application.
Campaigners argue the area is a vital green space used daily for exercise and wildlife watching. The council is expected to rule on the planning application in October 2026, and the Lawford Tye Action Group plans to present its petition at the Town Hall in Clacton on October 16.
