S&P 500 Hits Record Highs Near 7,800
The S&P 500 reached record highs driven by strong corporate earnings and passive investment inflows despite warnings of overbought market conditions.
The S&P 500 closed near 7,800, reaching record highs fueled by approximately 33% growth in second-quarter earnings and $350 billion in ETF inflows during July. Market breadth remains wide, with more than 72% of index members trading above their 200-day moving averages.
Buyer confidence has increased following soft inflation data, including a flat producer price index and a 0.1% increase in the July consumer price index. These figures have reduced expectations for a rate hike by the Federal Reserve System at its September 16 meeting.
Despite the rally, some analysts warn the index is technically overbought, trading roughly 10% above its 200-day moving average. This creates an asymmetrical risk-reward profile where potential downside to the mean outweighs the projected upside toward the 8,000 year-end target set by Goldman Sachs Private Wealth Management. Investors are cautioned against chasing record highs ahead of the Jackson Hole symposium and a historically weak September.
