David Shoebridge Bids for Australian Greens Leadership

Senator David Shoebridge has launched a bid for the leadership of the Australian Greens, proposing Victorian senator Steph Hodgins-May as his deputy. The leadership contest follows the resignation of Larissa Waters on Monday, who stepped down to undergo treatment for kidney disease.

Shoebridge faces competition from deputy leader Mehreen Faruqi, who is running on a joint ticket with senator Nick McKim, and communications spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young. The party room is currently meeting for a two-day retreat to determine the new leader, with a result expected Wednesday.

The contest occurs as the Greens seek a more forceful approach to counter the rise of One Nation. One Nation has replaced the Greens as the third major force in federal politics following the party's losses in the 2025 election.
