Rupi Soren Dies at 80 in Ranchi

Rupi Soren, the mother of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and wife of the late Jharkhand Mukti Morcha founding patron Shibu Soren, died Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the age of 80. She passed away at Hill View Hospital in Ranchi after a prolonged illness and a period on life support.

Hemant Soren stated that his mother had been his "greatest shelter" following the death of his father, Shibu Soren, who passed away on August 4, 2025. Rupi Soren had previously received medical treatment in Hyderabad starting September 7 before her health deteriorated upon returning home.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief, praising her work in empowering tribal communities. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha described her as a symbol of struggle, sacrifice, and patience, noting that her death represents an irreparable loss for both the state of Jharkhand and the country. The party highlighted her role in supporting Shibu Soren during the Jharkhand movement.
