Nigeria Democratic Congress Launches Reconciliation Process After Primary Disputes

The Nigeria Democratic Congress launched a nationwide reconciliation process on Thursday to address grievances and premature victory declarations following its primary elections for presidential, governorship, and legislative seats. The initiative follows a Wednesday meeting of the National Executive Committee, which approved the process to preserve party unity and cohesion.

Party leadership rejected allegations that the primaries were marred by irregularities or the imposition of candidates. Officials asserted that the selection process relied on consensus-building, consultations with state caucus leaders, and engagement with grassroots members. They clarified that the National Secretariat did not pick candidates and that aspirants who disagreed with recommendations were permitted to test their popularity through democratic means.

The party has referred specific complaints to its Appeal Panel. Additionally, the organization highlighted an affirmative action policy designed to increase the number of women in elective offices. Party leadership called on caucus leaders and stakeholders to engage all members to ensure the continued growth of the party.
