Infrastructure and Talent Shortages Hinder AI Expansion
Industry leaders identify energy availability, grid capacity, and a shortage of skilled technical talent as the primary bottlenecks slowing global artificial intelligence growth.
Industry leaders from Brookfield Asset Management, Infosys Limited, and global data center operations report that critical infrastructure bottlenecks are hindering the expansion of artificial intelligence. While capital and demand remain abundant, the primary constraints are energy availability, grid capacity, and a shortage of skilled technical talent, specifically electricians.
Experts indicate that the demand for compute and energy is so overwhelming that a supply-demand imbalance will likely persist through the end of the decade. To bypass aging or stagnant power grids, there is a growing shift toward off-grid and behind-the-meter solutions, including nuclear power, renewables, batteries, and fuel cells.
Geopolitical tensions have split the global supply chain into US-centric and China-centric ecosystems, while the rise of sovereign AI is prompting national governments to invest in secure, domestic data infrastructure. Despite emerging productivity gains in areas like preventative maintenance, leaders emphasize that human change management remains the most significant hurdle to unlocking AI value within the enterprise.
