Google Implements Attribution Links After AI Search Traffic Drop

Google is adding attribution links and opt-out tools globally after its AI-driven search changes caused a significant decline in human traffic to external websites.

The Google corporation has restructured its search engine by introducing AI Mode and Gemini agents, shifting from traditional hyperlinks toward conversational AI responses. This transition has increased user dwell time on Google platforms while reducing traffic to the open web. Reports from Cloudflare indicate that non-human traffic now exceeds 50% of total web traffic, and one study suggests 75% of search sessions no longer leave AI Mode.

These shifts have caused substantial financial and operational strain for publishers. The Wikimedia Foundation reported an 8% decline in human visitors and began charging AI firms for data access, while Vox Media cited the loss of search traffic as a reason for selling off assets. Cloudflare noted a nearly 40% drop in human traffic to business websites between June 2025 and April 2026.

In response to these trends, the British Competition and Markets Authority mandated that Google provide clear attribution links in chatbot responses and allow website operators to opt out of AI summaries. Google is now implementing these changes globally. Despite the declines, Google executives maintain that the company continues to drive billions of clicks to the web and remains committed to the health of the web ecosystem.
