Delhi High Court Orders Bombay Shaving Company to Edit Ad
The Delhi High Court ordered Visage Lines Personal Care to remove or edit a razor advertisement that Gillette India claims disparages its products.
The Delhi High Court ordered Visage Lines Personal Care, the parent company of Bombay Shaving Company, to remove or edit sections of its Switch4 razor advertisement by the evening of September 16, 2026. The order follows a lawsuit filed by Gillette India, which alleged the campaign unfairly portrayed its products as outdated and inferior by using the term Uncle Razor and referencing an American company.
During initial proceedings on September 15, Justice Jyoti Singh questioned whether the case belonged in the court's specialized Intellectual Property Division, noting that the advertisement featured an unbranded razor and did not explicitly name Gillette. While Bombay Shaving Company argued the campaign used satire, the court ruled that the right to advertise has limitations. Justice Singh directed the company to submit a revised version of the ad to Gillette to avoid a formal takedown order.
Gillette India maintained that the campaign constituted brand denigration rather than legitimate comparative advertising. The court has scheduled a follow-up hearing for September 17 to resolve the jurisdictional challenge regarding the Intellectual Property Division.
