David Eby Promises Gas Tax Cut and Price Guard
BC NDP leader David Eby proposed suspending the provincial motor fuel tax and capping retail prices to combat corporate price gouging.
BC NDP leader David Eby announced an election promise on October 1, 2026, to reduce fuel costs for drivers through a two-part plan. The proposal includes suspending the provincial motor fuel tax by 10 cents per litre and implementing a "price guard" that would authorize the British Columbia Utilities Commission to set maximum retail prices for gasoline and diesel to cap industry margins.
Eby stated that corporate price gouging has cost British Columbians approximately $865 million since the start of the U.S.-Iran war. He described the tax cut as a temporary measure amid a tariff dispute with the United States, estimating the cost to the provincial government at nearly $280 million through April 2027.
The combined measures are intended to save drivers up to 30 cents per litre. Eby claimed the plan could save a typical two-car family in Surrey up to $100 per month.
